Academic program

The 2024 academic program is open for pianists of any age. The participants will have individual lessons with exceptional artists, attend and perform at open masterclasses and festival concerts.

The academic program for each participant includes:

  • Individual lessons with distinguished faculty
  • Participation at open masterclasses (optional, please send repertoire in advance)
  • Performance at the festival concerts (please send repertoire in advance, only performance-ready pieces, and video recording)
  • Excursions and cultural activities.
  • Optional: participation at the International Piano Competition Petrof Durango 2024 (please see the rules below).

Artistic program

The faculty, students and guest artists of the Petrof Fest perform concerts in various venues. These are formal events, open to the general public.

Participants should send their proposed repertoire together with their application form to be considered for performances at the festival. Please send only performance-ready pieces and add a video link of your performance of each piece (must be performed from memory, except ensembles).

INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION: November 16-20, 2024.

Rules:

  1. Pianists of any nationality who have NOT reached the age of 21 as of November 20, 2024, may apply.

  2. The competition will be held between November 16 and 20, 2024, at the Durango Conservatory of Music, located on Calle Urrea corner with Gómez Farías, Tierra Blanca, C.P.34139, Durango city, Durango state, Mexico.

  3. To participate in the competition, pianists must make the corresponding application. To do so, they must send the materials indicated below in these rules by email to the organizing committee of the contest, no later than November 1, 2024. The committee will confirm receipt of the materials and then the pianist will be registered as a participant.

Categories of participation:

  1. The contest will be divided into three categories of participation, according to the age of the competitors:

    • Debut category: under 12 years old

    • Category A: 12 to 15 years old

    • Category B: 16 to 20 years old

  1. November 20, 2024, will be taken as the date to define the age of the participants.

Repertory:

  1. For the Debut Category (under 12 years old), the repertoire will be of free choice, with a minimum duration of 8 minutes and a maximum of 15 minutes. It is recommended to select the works that best represent the technical and artistic capacity of the participant.

  2. For Category A (12 to 15 years old), the following repertoire must be presented, with a maximum duration of 20 minutes:

  1. A work from the Baroque period.

  2. An allegro movement from a classical sonata.

  3. An étude or virtuoso piece.

  1. For Category B (16 to 20 years old), the following repertoire must be presented, with a minimum duration of 20 minutes and a maximum of 40 minutes:

  1. A work from the Baroque period.

  2. One or more movements of a classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart, Clementi, Beethoven, or Schubert).

  3. A work from the Romantic period (étude, character piece, scherzo, ballade, etc.)

  4. A work of free choice.

  1. All works submitted to the competition, in any of the three categories, must correspond to formal classical music, and be published at the time of the competition. Simplified arrangements are not permitted.

  2. All works must be performed from memory and without repetitions (except scherzi and minuetti).

  3. Participants must have with them the scores of their repertoire (original or copy), ready to present to the organizing committee of the competition, if requested. The requested scores will be returned to the competitors at the end of their participation.

Awards:

  1. The following prizes will be awarded in their respective categories:

Debut Category (under 12 years of age):

      • 1º place: $5,000 MXN and Diploma

      • 2º place: $3,000 MXN and Diploma

      • 3º place: $2,000 MXN and Diploma

Category A (12-15 years of age):

      • 1º place: $10,000 MXN and Diploma

      • 2º place: $7,000 MXN and Diploma

      • 3º place: $5,000 MXN and Diploma

Category B (16-20 years of age):

      • 1º place: $15,000 MXN and Diploma

      • 2º place: $10,000 MXN and Diploma

      • 3º place: $7,000 MXN and Diploma

  1. The jury has the right to declare ties and award honorable mentions.

  2. The Award Ceremony and the Winners’ Concert will take place on November 20, 2024. To receive their prize, winners must show up at the Awards Ceremony and play at the Winners’ Concert.

Jury:

  1. The jury will consist of internationally renowned master pianists. Their decision will be final.

General:

  1. The dress code for participants during the tests and the final concert will be formal.

  2. The order of participation will be determined by a draw, which will take place at the Inauguration on November 15th.

  3. Competitors must show up on the day and time of their participation, punctually and ready to play.

  4. Underage participants must be always accompanied by an adult.

  5. The travel expenses to the city of Durango and back, as well as accommodation during the contest are responsibility of the participants.

Registration for the competition:

  1. Those interested in participating in the competition must send the following registration materials:

  1. Application form, fully completed and signed by a parent, guardian, or teacher (or by the participant, if over 18 years of age).

  2. Copy of birth certificate, passport, or similar official identification.

  3. An artistic photo of high resolution (preferably in color, in .jpg or .pdf file).

  4. Contest registration fee: $50 USD (or its equivalent in MXN). Once the materials of the above points have been received, you will be sent the bank details to deposit or transfer the registration fee. Registration will be complete upon receipt of proof of payment.

INTERNATIONAL PIANO ACADEMY: November 16-24.

  1. Pianists of any age and nationality, previously registered, may participate.

  2. The registration deadline will be November 1, 2024.

  3. The academic program will consist of individual lessons with internationally renowned teachers, open master classes, and concerts by the participants.

  4. The participants of the competition may also participate at the academy, if they cover the tuition fee.

  5. Underage participants must always be accompanied by an adult.

Registration for the academy:

  1. Those interested in participating in the academy must send the following registration materials:

    1. Registration application fully completed and signed by the parent, guardian, or teacher (or by the participant, if over 18 years of age).

    2. Copy of birth certificate, passport, or similar official identification.

    3. Artistic biography of maximum 500 words.

    4. Participants must have one or more works ready to perform in concert, this repertoire must be indicated in the application form.

Costs and tuition:

  1. Tuition fee for active participants is $800 USD.

  2. Auditors who wish to enter the classes and receive a diploma for their participation as an auditor must cover a fee of $1,500 MXN.

  3. The travel expenses to the city of Durango and back, as well as accommodation during the contest are the responsibility of the participants.
